My idea for this design was to create a very warm cardigan that can be worn as an outer layer, like a jacket. The denseness of the garter stitch, knit using two strands of DK held together, forms a lovely insulating layer, while the deep raglan shaping allows for multiple layers to be piled up underneath. The shawl collar is the icing on the cake, with the double layer of garter stitch creating a toasty neck warmer.
Pattern Notes
Gartigan is knit from the top down using raglan shaping. The sleeves are knit straight to the cuff, where a one-row decrease creates a balloon-sleeve effect. The shawl collar is shaped with German Short Rows, forming a lovely warm double layer at the neck.
Gartigan was designed to be worn with 0-2” (0-5cm) positive ease around the bust, while the deep-raglan yoke creates more space at the underarm which is great for layering pieces underneath the cardigan. There is an option to add an afterthought button closure; however, the cardigan can be worn open or with a shawl-pin closure. I have knit this design using two strands of DK-weight yarn held together to form a very cosy fabric. I used one colour, but you could have a bit of fun and use two different ones held together for a marled effect.
